Facebook-owned WhatsApp has released a payment-enabled beta version of its messaging app in India.

The exercise is being undertaken in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India.  

WhatsApp allows peer-to-peer payments through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) infrastructure. 

With the Government of India's digital India push, UPI transaction volumes are expected to get a boost, with WhatsApp following Google Tez and Paytm.
