Tech Talks on Mobiles: The otherwise stable tech industry of India is facing tricky times in the wake of coronavirus outbreak and GST council's decision to increase rates on mobile phones to 18 percent from 12 percent with effect from April 1. The coronavirus outbreak had forced both Realme and Xiaomi to cancel on-ground launch events for their new smartphones. The Mobile World Congress 2020 was called off this year as well. The supply chains had taken a hit and there is a chance that smartphones might get expensive in coming days.

The hike in GST rates is expected to have a further impact on the prices. Manu Kumar Jain, managing director of Xiaomi India, said the industry had heeded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to participate in the “Make in India” initiative. “But today’s recommendation by the GST Council to raise GST rate on mobile phones from 12 per cent to 18 per cent will seriously harm the industry,” he said.
