Facebook is facing intense competition from Zoom video calling platform and it is looking to fight back. This is in the form of its new service called Messenger Rooms, which has been launched recently. Zoom has emerged as the go-to video app for most professionals as work from home became a common practice for almost everyone due to the ongoing lockdown because of coronavirus lockdown. The reason behind Zoom’s popularity was that it allowed 50 people to join a conversation even in its basic plan. The feature allowed companies to host meetings online.

Zoom thereby virtually forced others to make changes to their platforms, including Facebook, to remain relevant. The social media giant has already increased the limit for participants on WhatsApp, which it owns, to eight.

As Facebook explains in a blog post, Messenger Rooms isn't a separate app but rather a feature that can be launched from the existing Facebook or Messenger apps. The tool will allow you to add 50 participants while making a call through the app. It will also allow you to play around with virtual backgrounds, like Zoom.

Facebook says it'll soon be adding Messenger Rooms integration to Instagram, WhatsApp, and the Portal video caller too, so you'll be able to jump into a video chat from whatever app or device you happen to be on. The roll out of Messenger Rooms – which Facebook says will happen in the coming weeks – gives you yet another way of keeping in touch with friends and family.

In another move, Facebook has reinstated the Live With feature for livestream broadcasts, where two people can join in on one livestream. The feature was cut in November as it didn't add enough "value", according to Facebook at the time.
