WhatsApp feature: Chat backup with password protection may be launched soon | Heres all you need to know

In good news for users, Facebook-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will enable users to protect their password and encrypt their cloud chat backups. Earlier, only chats were end-to-end encrypted on WhatsApp. This new WhatsApp feature will make your account more secure.

According to WABetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp,  reported a year ago that the security update is a work-in-progress. But, recently, in a major development, the website took to micro-blogging site Twitter and shared screenshots of how this upcoming new feature could be presented in the service’s iOS and Android apps.

WABetaInfo wrote on Twitter: "As previously announced, @WhatsApp is working on cloud backups encryption. The chat database and media will be safe from unauthorized access when using a password. The password is private and it's not sent to WhatsApp. It will be available in a future build for iOS and Android."

One of the screenshots shared on the Twitter read: “To prevent unauthorized access to your iCloud Drive backup, you can set a password that will be used to encrypt future backups. This password will be required when you restore from the backup." 

The app then asks the user to confirm their phone number and select a password that’s at least eight characters long. Another screenshot warns that “WhatsApp will not be able to help recover forgotten passwords." "The chat database is already encrypted now (excluding media), but the algorithm is reversible and it's not end-to-end encrypted.

Local Android backups will be compatible with this feature. The chat DB and media will be encrypted using a password that only you know," the website wrote on the social media platform.

Earlier, the Facebook-owned messaging platform rolled out the feature to import third-party sticker packs in the app. The feature is available for Android and iOS users in India, Brazil, and Indonesia.

After releasing some new features, like the possibility to mute videos before sending them to your contacts, WhatsApp is starting to enable a feature for specific countries, WABetaInfo reported. WhatsApp’s latest update is included in WhatsApp for Android 2.21.3.19 and newer versions as well as WhatsApp for iOS 2.21.31.2 and newer versions.
