Due to the Coronavirus pandemic enforced lockdown, digital payments have grown exponentially. Now people are having to look at online payment options even for small transactions. But, during the last three months of the lockdown period, chances of online fraud also grew with the rise in digital payments. UPI PIN fraud is one of them. It should be remembered that UPI PIN is not a guarantee of security.

Advising users to access UPI payments only from trusted payment gateways, Delhi-based cyber crime expert Pawan Duggal said, "Users should keep their UPI PIN credentials as it can be used to cause fraud. If a link has been given for inserting UPI PIN in any website, then avoid it. In addition, use Secured and Trusted App only for transaction (Online Transactions). For caution, use UPI PIN only on a secure application like BHIM UPI."

Duggal advised digital payment app users to avoid sharing the OTP (One Time Password) with a stranger and said, "Remember, the bank never asks you to share OTP. In any case you get a call from someone posing as an executive of the bank and asks for you to share the OTP, refuse to do so immediately and also report that number."

He said that banks also send messages to customers on how to remain safe from such mails and messages from time to time. People are advised to follow them.

Duggal also had advice for the digital payments app users and said that they must avoid clicking on emails offers that are hard to believe. He said that it can be a phishing trap and a single click can give one's entire data, including usernames and passwords to fraudsters.
