Phishing has become one of the most infamous way to cheat people of their money. India’s largest public lender State Bank of India warns its customers against the potential threats and also lists some of the most prevalent phishing scams in the country.

Phishing is a fraudulent activity done on anybody to extract sensitive data by impersonating oneself as a trustworthy entity in online banking or other forms of digital banking processes.

Phishing can happen over a phone, email, over social media, matrimonial portals etc with various approaches and strategies, the SBI has warned its customers on its official twitter handle @TheOfficialSBI.

Here are some of the most common phishing scams in India:

  1. Credit Card/Banking Phishing Scams
  2. OTP/Banking Phishing Scams
  3. Fake Government Schemes Website
  4. Documents Cloud Phishing Scams
  5. Fake Jobs Phishing Scams
  6. Lottery Phishing Scams
  7. Fake Government body emails
  8. Event Phishing – like sporting events, concerts

The bank recommends its customers to report these to the local police authorities or register complaint at https://cybercrime.gov.in
 
Useful tips to prevent any phishing attack
 
-- Ensure that the URL in your browser address bar begins with "https"
 
-- The address or status bar displays the padlock symbol. Click the padlock to view and verify the security certificate
 
-- The address bar turns green indicating that the site is secured with an SSL Certificate that meets the Extended Validation Standard.
(SSL is compatible for IE 7.0 and above, Mozilla Firefox 3.1 and above, Opera 9.5 and above, Safari 3.5 and above, Google Chrome).
   
State Bank or any of its representatives never sends you email/SMS or calls you over the phone to get your personal information, password or one time SMS (high security) password.
 
Any such e-mail/SMS or phone call is an attempt to fraudulently withdraw money from your account through Internet Banking. Never respond to such an email/SMS or phone call.
