PAN Aadhaar Link: The deadline for Aadhaar PAN link is 30th June 2020 failing to which one's PAN card would become inoperative. According to the recent estimates by the income tax department around 17 crore PAN cards are not linked with Aadhaar Card and hence it needs to be linked within the given deadline of 30th June 2020.

Earlier, the Income Tax Department had made it mandatory for all Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Aadhaar Card-holders to link both before 31st of March 2020. However, in case you failed to do so, the Income Tax Department made another announcement on its official Twitter handle and asked Indian citizens to do the linking by 30th June 2020. Last month, the Income Tax Department had reprimanded 17 crore PAN cardholders to do their PAN Aadhaar link as they were not linked. But, due to the Coronavirus lockdown, the Central Government decided to extend the PAN Aadhaar link deadline by three months to 30th June 2020.

So, after the end of COVID-19 lockdown, you should first do it on an urgent basis and save you PAN card from becoming inoperative.

Reminding about the problems that one will have to face in case one's PAN Aadhaar linking is not done by 30th June 2020; SEBI registered tax and investment expert Manikaran Singhal said, "Do note that while income tax returns can be filed without PAN Aadhaar linking, the income tax department will not process the income tax returns until PAN and Aadhaar are linked. People can visit the official e-filing website of the department to link the two identities, in both the cases– identical names in the two databases or in case where there is a minor mismatch." Singhal said that this can be done online by sending an SMS.

How to do PAN Aadhaar linking?

PAN Aadhaar link can be done through an SMS also. For the PAN Aadhaar link through the SMS, one needs to send an SMS at 567678 or 56161. Format of the SMS is as follows:

UIDAIPAN(12digit Aadhaar number) space (10 digit PAN Number).

Means if someone has an Aadhaar Card number ABCDXXXXXXXXXX and PAN Card number ABCXXXXXXX then the format of the SMS will be "UIDAIPANABCDXXXXXXXXXX ABCXXXXXXX".
