The last date to link the Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar was June 30, 2023. In case you failed to link PAN with the Aadhaar number, your PAN will become 'inoperative'. The primary purpose of PAN is to provide a universal identification to an individual's financial transactions and it helps the Income Tax Department to monitor the same when needed. On the other hand, the Aadhaar number, which is issued to every Indian by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), acts as an identity proof for all.

Considering the importance of both these documents, the Income Tax Department mandated linking PAN and Aadhaar to ease financial transactions. While a large section of people have already linked their PAN and Aadhaar, there are still many people who failed to do so within the deadline. In such a case, one might often worry about the consequences of not linking PAN and Aadhaar. There is also confusion about whether failure to link PAN-Aadhaar would affect salary getting credited to one’s bank account.

In that case, if your PAN has also become ‘inoperative’ and you also have certain questions about future financial transactions, here are a few important points you should know.

Will I get my salary if my PAN and Aadhaar cards are not linked?

As PAN plays a major role in regulating financial transactions, individuals often worry about their salary-related transactions in case they have not linked PAN and Aadhaar. If your PAN turns ‘inoperative’ for failure to link with Aadhaar it may lead to a few problems. However, it won’t affect your salary getting credited to your bank account.

With an ‘inoperative’ PAN a person will not be able to furnish, intimate or quote his PAN, but the salary will continue to be credited as it is done by the employer and banks don't restrict such transfers.

There could be a delay in receiving the salary in some cases as employers usually require a valid PAN to process the salary.

In such a case, employees need to inform their employers beforehand to find a solution to the issue to avoid any complications.

How to reactivate PAN?

In case your PAN card has become inoperative, you can still reactivate it by paying a late fine of Rs 1,000. As per the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), individuals need to inform the designated authority about their issue and pay a fee of Rs 1,000.

One can also visit the official website and submit a 'PAN-Aadhaar' linking request. The PAN reactivating process is expected to take 30 days from the date of linking.
