PAN-Aadhaar Linking last date: The extension of PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline came as good news for scores of users who had not done the same till the end of the previous deadline on March 31. However, there is no such relief for Income taxpayers who need to mandatorily quote their PAN. They will need to do one more thing this year. The last date for filing Income Tax Return for Assessment Year 2019-20 will be July 31. To file the ITR, every taxpayer would have to compulsorily do one more thing - "quote and link" Aadhaar number.

In a clarification dated March 31, 2019, Department of Revenue, Central Board of Direct Taxes under the Ministry of Finance said it would be mandatory for taxpayers to quote and link Aadhaar while filing the Income Tax Return. Here's the full text of the clarification: 

CBDT issues clarification on linking of PAN with Aadhaar

It has been reported in some sections of the media that those PANs which are not linked with Aadhaar number by 31.03.2019 may be invalidated. The matter has been considered by the Central Government and now the cut-off date for intimating the Aadhaar number and linking PAN with Aadhaar is 30.09.2019, unless specifically exempted.

Notwithstanding the last date of intimating/linking of Aadhaar Number with PAN being 30.09.2019, it is also made clear that w.e.f. 01.04.2019, it is mandatory to quote and link Aadhaar number while filing the return of income, unless specifically exempted.

The government had extended the deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking by six months till 30 September on Sunday last. This was the sixth time the government extended the deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking. The government had said in June 2018 that PAN needed to be linked with the biometric ID by 31 March.
