National Pension System (NPS) is a government backed retirement plan in which you can choose how much fund to be put in which asset class. Any individual withing the age category of 18 to 65 years, can open an NPS account. There are two options for applying for an NPS account, either to visit the Point of Presence (PoP), or do it online through the e-NPS website- enps.nsdl.com. To apply online, the applicant will required to quote the PAN (Permanent Account Number) along with his/her bank details.

The subscriber will also required to activate his/her Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), an identification number for NPS accounts, to open an NPS account online.

Here is a step by step guide on to open the NPS account online:

Step 1: Visit the eNPS portal- enps.nsdl.com. Under the NPS section, you will find option of registration and contribution, as well as activation of a Tier 2 account. 

Step 2: After that click on 'registration' option. 

Step 3: Now, enter your status, PAN and bank details and select 'continue'. 

Step 3: Now enter your personal and identity details on the new page

Step 4: Now upload a scanned photograph along with a signature (in image form) online

Step 5: After this, you will be redirected to a payment gateway for making payment for an NPS account.

After a successful payment, the user will be allotted a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), which you will require to send to the Central Recordkeeping Agency in complete form within 30 days. In case of failing to do so in due time, will lead to freezing of the identification number, as per the eNPS portal.
