How to check EPF balance: Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is a savings fund meant for employees across India. The benefits are many for employees. The employees and the employers together, contribute an equal amount into EPF savings that can be used or withdrawn after a certain number of years, at the time of retirement, on switching jobs or in some other cases. Each month, the employer transfers a certain amount into the employee's EPF account along with the latter's contribution. The EPF passbook shows the aggregate amount in account along with the details of the monthly contributions. It ensures that the employee has a big amount of money accumulating over the years so that his or her retirement is comfortable.

All this makes EPF a very popular investment option. So, for employees, the question that often arises is - how to check EPF balance? Well, the government has ensured that an employee can check his or her EPF balance through both offline and online modes. In fact, there are number of ways to check EPF balance and these include SMS, giving a missed call, via the EPFO app, and the EPFO portal. 

Here is how to check EPF balance through app, SMS, missed call, website through a comprehensive, step by step guide:

1. How to check EPF balance through EPFO portal:

In order to check EPF balance, the employer needs to have an activated Universal Account Number (UAN). Once it is activated, the person can follow these steps to know the exact balance. 

Step 1: The first step is to log on to the EPFO portal,  after that go to the tab ‘Our Services’ and choose the option that says 'for employees' from the drop-down menu.

Step 2: Now from the drop down menu options, click on the option ‘Member passbook’ under the option 'Services.'

Step 3: A new login page will appear on your screen, now enter your UAN number and password here (after its activation).

Step 4: Now, by logging in, you can access your EPF account and check all the details.

2. How to check EPF balance through an SMS:

It is required to link UAN number with your KYC details, i.e. Aadhar or PAN or bank account details and to get access to the EPF balance via SMS.    

Step 1: The first step is to send an SMS to mobile number 7738299899.

Step 2: For SMS, send the message as - EPFOHO UAN ENG.

Step 3: To set your preferred language of communication, you can use the first three characters of your preferred language. If you want to receive updates in English, write EPFOHO UAN ENG, where ENG stands for English.

The facility is available in languages like English, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali.

3. How to check EPF balance by giving a missed call:

It is possible to inquire about EPF balance by giving a missed call to the authorised phone from your registered mobile number. However, the service is only applicable if the integration of your UAN with KYC details is done. 

Step 1: First give a missed call to the number- 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number.

Step 2: After making a call, you will receive an SMS with all your PF details like balance, recent transaction, name etc.

4. By using the EPFO application:

To check your EPF balance, make sure that your UAN number is activated by the employer.   

You can also check your EPF balance by downloading the 'm-sewa app of EPFO' from the Google Play Store, it is an official mobile app by EPFO.

Step 1: After the app is downloaded, open the application on phone. 

Step 3: Now click on ‘Member’ and go to ‘Balance/Passbook’.

Step 2: After that, enter your UAN and registered mobile number.

The system will automatically verify your mobile number and your UAN. If all the details are matched withing the system, you can view your updated EPF balance details. However, in case of a mismatch, the system will show an error.
