The HDFC Bank customers need to be very careful as fraudsters are targeting Indian individuals and businesses, the bank has said in an email sent out to its customers. The fraudulent activities in India and around the world have increased over the last few months as people continue to battle against the COVID-19 outbreak.

Under the new fraud methods highlighted by HDFC Bank, customers are getting mails from fraudsters impersonating government organisations to lure victims using Covid-19 theme. 

“An advisory has been issued on the targeted phishing campaign against Indian individuals and businesses. These malicious e-mail are impersonated as government organisations to lure victims using Covid-19 theme. It then asks you to click on the attachment or fill in your financial details on a fake website,” the email from HDFC said.

What should customers do? 

  • Always download banking apps from PlayStore or App Store. 
  • Beware of unfamiliar e-mail addresses and check for spelling errors in email, website or links. 
  • Beware of emails providing special offers on free COVID-19 tests, Aid and cashback.  
  • Maintain and strong and complex password for your accounts  

What you must not do? 

  • Do not open or click on the mail from any untrusted source.  
  • Do not click on attachments like pif, exe, tmp, url, vb, vbe, scr, reg, pst, cer, cmd, com, bat, dil. 
  • Never download apps related to COVID-19 from untrusted source. 
  • Do not share your passwords or financial details to anyone. 

Apart from this, the customers should start taking cyber security more seriously. Online security tops the charts as the most important factor for millennials looking to find their ‘Digital Comfort Zones’ at home, despite the fact that over a third of them (37%) think they’re boring to be the victim of cybercrime, a recent study by Kaspersky showed.
