How can nominees or a legal heirs claim Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) in the event of the death of account holders? The question is quite a serious one and all eventualities must recognised and prepared for, not just by the provident fund holder but also his or her immediate family. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) allows the entire EPF amount to be paid to the nominee in case there is a death of the scheme subscriber.

The nominee of the EPF account holder may not claim the scheme benefits due to ignorance or unwillingness because of the assumptions of procedural hassles. But the same can be claimed online with ease.

Mindful of the problems being faced by the account holders and their nominees, the EPFO provides two online functionalities – a revamped version of the e-Nomination facility for filing nomination form by the EPF members and an online provision for EPF death withdrawal claim by the beneficiary.

The e-Nomination functionality is available at Member Interface of EPFO Unified Portal. Any member who has a Universal Account Number (UAN) seeded with Aadhaar can avail of this facility online. An EPF account holder can update, or change the name of his/her nominee or beneficiary details online. Note that the Aadhaar number of the beneficiary is a mandatory requirement for the completion of the e-nomination procedure.

The beneficiary is also required to fill 'Member Nominee Form' 10D, 20 and 5IF Application.

If the account holder dies, the nominee or beneficiary can submit EPF Composite Death Claim Form, based on OTP on his/her Aadhaar linked mobile.

The beneficiary or nominee can also submit the Death claim form to the member’s employer or the EPFO in offline mode also.
