Earlier you must have come across that, every time when you went to open a bank account you would be given a new debit card in a letter. In that letter, you would have debit card and four-digit random numbers given by bank which used to operate like your ATM pin. Having a debit card pin is must, because that’s the only security code used when you are carrying ATM transactions. However, in case of online banking, some banks also not only take your debit card PIN in consideration but also use One-Time Password and other services. Hence, you must keep your ATM pin safe. But not many are aware how to exactly generate debit card pin.

Before we get into how to generate ATM pin, one must note that you should register your mobile number with bank and must be the customer to carry this facility at an ATM. This means, you should not let anyone either be your spouse, family or friends to generate an ATM pin. 

Here’s how you can generate your debit card pin at an ATM. 

Step 1 - Visit your nearby bank branch, and insert your debit card in teller machine. 

Step 2 - There will be host of options available like cash withdrawal, balance enquiry and mini statement etc. However, right below these options you must find another pointer which would say generate ATM pin. 

Step 3 - Once selected Generate Pin option, you will be directed to a page which will hold two new options like generate OTP and available OTP. 

Step 4 - Firstly, you have to select generate OTP, and within few minutes you should receive a six-digit code on your registered mobile number. 

Step 5 - Once again insert your card at an ATM, and select the option of generate pin. 

Step 6 - You will be once again directed to the same two option page involving OTP. This time you should select One-Time-Password available. 

Step 7 - Once selected OTP available option, you will be asked to put a new PIN. 

Step 8 - Add any random four-digit number which will be easy enough for you to remember and submit. Avoid keeping birthdates and phone number as ATM pin, as it will be easily hacked. 

Step 9 - Once feeded the new PIN, you will be asked to re-enter the same four-digit number as a second authentication pattern. Then click submit.

Step 10 - ATM pin generated. You can immediately carry any transaction at an ATM, using the new pin number.

However, it needs to be noted that, this is most common procedure in majority of state-owned and private banks. But in case of some private banks, they also ask you to feed your registered mobile number while selecting generate OTP. Hence, remember to not be confused and follow the prescribed pattern. Once you select the option of generate ATM pin on the machine, after inserting debit card, the instruction becomes quite easy. 

Apart from ATMs, a customer can also generate pin using sms and online banking facilities and the instructions varies from bank to bank. Hence, always take the advice of your bank if you have queries. Also, in case of online, you will have to feed in your bank account number, while in regards to SMS you will have to add a pattern of message depending upon your bank codes.
