Before buying any Gold item, you must check that the jewellery doesn't compromise on quality. Also, you should be more alert in case the offer price is very less than the market price.

Gold buying checklist

Before buying the Gold item, you should double check the price, the making charge of the jewellery and the quality (in terms of carat). This needs to be done as several complaints regarding fake hallmarking have been reported in recent times. This happens because not all jewellers have the hallmarking licence. Those selling compromised Gold often try not to provide the original bill or certificate to the customers

You can get the purity of your Gold item checked at the lab of Bureau of Indian standards.

Five types of symbols are marked on the jewellery hallmarked at a BIS centre. These include BIS logo, fitness number (carat), marking centre logo, year code and trademark of the seller/jeweller.

The fitness number is different for the different carat of Gold - 958 is for 23 carat Gold, 916 for 22 carat, 875 for 21 carat, 708 for 17 carat, 585 for 14 carat, 375 for 9 carat and 333 for 8 carat.
