How do cheaters steal people's money via smartphones? Simply, they call people and fool them into revealing their confidential details like SIM number and other details, bank account number, and even usernames and passwords over a phone call and thereafter they successfully siphon-off their money.

Here is one shocking case that has come to the fore. A Pune man, 49-year-old Dinesh Kukreja, has lost as much as Rs 93.5 lakh after getting duped by a telecaller who was a fraudster. The telecaller impersonated an Airtel employee and fooled Kukreja to get his SIM details of the number linked to his bank accounts. After getting his details, the caller cloned his SIM and siphoned off whopping Rs 93.5 lakh from his bank account. A case under Section 66 (a) (d) of the Information Technology Act, and Section 419, 420 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the unidentified person (fake employee).

According to a Hindustan Times report, 49-year-old Dinesh Kukreja rushed to lodge an FIR with the police as soon as he noticed that he had lost his money. Importantly, bank account holders should know that the sooner they lodge a complaint with the bank and police the better the chances of them recovering their money. Else, they will lose it forever as bank will refuse to pay!

So, what is SIM Cloning, the illegal method through which public loses its money?

As the name suggests, SIM cloning is a process of making a duplicate SIM of a legitimate SIM card. When a SIM is cloned, all the information related to the original SIM is transferred to the duplicate SIM.

How to safeguard yourself against SIM cloning? Well, simply, do not do this!

It is important for all to know that their telecom operator neither asks for the details like bank account nor of your SIM card's number. Also, one should never share his/her confidential details like the PIN, Passwords, and SIM number etc with anyone. You should also not give your SIM card to any person especially if the SIM card is linked to your bank accounts and credit/debit cards. It goes without saying that no one should give their smartphone to anyone even for 5 minutes and never leave it unattended.
