Aadhaar PAN Link: If you don't do linking by last date, which is 31st March 2020, it will become inoperative from the next financial year. As per the Income Tax Department's latest communication, it's mandatory for a PAN cardholder to do the PAN Aadhaar link by 31st March 2020, otherwise, they will make your PAN 'inoperative.' The Income Tax Department informed about its decision from its official Twitter handle advising PAN Card-holders to do the Aadhaar PAN link through biometric Aadhaar authentication. One can do one the linking by visiting the nearest NSDL or UITLL service center as well.

The Income Tax Department has also given the ways through which one can do Aadhaar PAN link. First and foremost is through SMS. For PAN Aadhaar link through SMS, one needs to send an SMS at 567678 or 56161. The SMS format is as follows:

UIDAIPAN12 digitAadhaar number space 10 digit PAN Number.

One can do PAN Aadhaar linking through the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.

The PAN Aadhaar linking became necessary after the Supreme Court September 2018 judgment that upheld the validity of the Aadhaar Card and said that it would be mandatory for filing of income tax returns and allotment of PAN cards. According to the reports, around 17.58 crore PAN cards are still not linked with the Aadhaar Card of the same person.

According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (DBDT),  “Where a person, who has been allotted the permanent account number (PAN) as on July 1, 2017 and is required to intimate his Aadhaar number under sub-section (2) of section 139AA, has failed to intimate the same on or before March 31, 2020, the permanent account number of such person shall become inoperative immediately after the said date for the purposes of furnishing, intimating or quoting under the Act.”
