After you file ITR, the I-T department allows taxpayers to check if the department has accepted and processed their returns. To check ITR status, taxpayers will have to visit the I-T department's website and log in. When you log in, you are provided with information like downloading the return/notification.

Besides, you can also see the previous ITR filings. According to the I-T department's portal, there are different types of ITR statuses.

Once you file ITR, the I-T department takes note of the return and checks for any error or defect. The department informs the taxpayer in case of any defect/error and asks to rectify the error(s).

Taxpayers should note that if you didn't respond to the I-T department's communication or message regarding a defective return, then the ITR filed will not be processed and be treated as invalid.
