Universal Account Number or UAN is a 12-digit number issued by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to every member enrolled under the Employees’ Provident Fund scheme.  The UAN number is mandatory for all EPF related transactions and multiple member Ids issued by an employee operate under one UAN. While the member Ids for EFP subscribers may change with shifting to a new job, the UAN number remains the same throughout the employment period.

The Universal Account Number is necessary for all transactions related to EPF like updating balance on passbook, advance withdrawals and even final settlement after retirement.

Why linking UAN with your mobile number is important?

As per the EPFO guidelines, it is mandatory to link the UAN with your mobile number. The EPF members get all the updates about their provident fund account through their registered mobile number. If you are a new member of the Employees' Provident Fund, you should link your mobile number at the earliest. Also, if you have got a new mobile number it is necessary to immediately update the same on your EPFO profile.

The EPF subscribers also get SMS updates about their employer contribution and monthly EPF balance on their mobile numbers. You will also receive the OTP to log in to the EPFO portal on your mobile phone.

It’s important to note that the EPF subscribers should only register the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar card on the EPFO website.
