As per the information, now, EPFO registered employers who are engaging employees through contractors can add the details of contractors and contract employees at EPFO's unified portal that is unifiedportal-emp.epfindia.gov.in/epfo/.

While Principal Employers (PE) who are not registered with EPFO can register on Unified Portal to receive login/password to add details of their contractors and contract employees.

On adding contractor's details, PE will be able to view through their login the employee wise remittance made by contractors through ECR.

Also, PE can now ensure that their contractors enroll all contract workers and remit EPF contributions through Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR).

Who is a principal employer?

Principal employer is the owner or occupier or manager in a factory. However, in an establishment or a company, PE is the one who is in control and supervision of establishment or company.

The ECR was launched in April 2012 making the online filing of the returns mandatory for the employers.

With the launch of the ECR no paper return is required to be prepared and submitted to EPFO and employers will also get the confirmation of payment via SMS instantly.
