As per Drik Panchang, Shivaratri is a festival of the convergence of Shiva and Shakti. Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha is known as Maha Shivaratri, according to the South Indian calendar. However, according to the North Indian calendar, Masik Shivaratri, in the month of Phalguna, is known as Maha Shivaratri.

Bank holiday on Mahashivratri 2024 state-wise full list

Banks are closed in Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Hyderabad (AP and Telangana), Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram on March 8, leading to a long weekend as March 9 and March 10 will be Saturday and Sunday, respectively. 

Notably, this month, banks will remain closed for an additional eight days, and extending the usual weekend breaks on the second and fourth Saturdays along with Sundays will take the holiday count to 14.

The holiday observance differs across the country, with some days marked as public holidays nationwide while others are specific to certain regions.
