NYSE's data analytics team is currently conducting a poll regarding the same with data market participants.

The market participants have been asked the following questions:

  • Merits and demerits of 24*7 trading;
  • Trading should be done for five or seven days;
  • Measures to curb price volatility;
  • Overnight staffing arrangements;
  • Trading volumes and issues faced by clearing houses.

The data analytics team notes there is a high demand for stocks such as Nvidia and Apple from 8 pm to 6 am.

Further, reports say that the American hedge-fund manager Steve Cohen-backed startup 24 Exchange is ready to launch 24/7 trading. It is awaiting approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Stock exchanges have become something of a laggard in a world where other big markets, including US Treasuries, major currencies and leading stock index futures, can be traded around the clock from Monday to Friday, The Financial Times said in its report.

"An overnight exchange, however, would be a step-change in how late trading is perceived because of its heavy regulatory oversight compared with dark pools. Exchanges are directly supervised by the Securities and Exchange Commission and tested for their stability and security as well as needing the approval to alter any rules," the FT report said further.
