HUID on gold jewellery: The government has announced that the sale of gold jewellery without a HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number will not be allowed from April 1 onwards. This simply means that from April 1, 2023, consumers will only get a 6-digit alphanumeric ID embossed in the gold jewellery even when they are purchasing it from a local jewellery store. It is to be noted that the 4-digit HUID was already in place, but its use was stopped over two years ago. Now, the sale of jewellery with a 4-digit HUID number will be stopped on April 1.

From April 1, each piece of gold jewellery will have a BIS hallmark, purity of gold (for example, 0 22K916), and a 6-digit HUID embossed on it.

During a special programme broadcasted on the Zee Business news channel, Prithviraj Kothari, Managing Director of Riddhisiddhi Bullion Ltd (RSBL), said that people are ready to implement the six-digit HUID but it would be good if the government could give some extensions.

However, Kothari emphasised that the six-digit HUID should be made mandatory across India.

Why the government has decided to shift from a 4-digit HUID to a 6-digit HUID?

According to Ashish Pethe, former chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), the move is aimed at ensuring the purity of Hallmarked jewellery.

How will the mandatory 6-digit HUID affect consumers?

Prithviraj Kothari emphasised that consumers with four-digit HUID jewellery will not face any problem while selling their jewellery. "The six-digit HUID is only for jewellers i.e. they will not be allowed to sell jewellery without this 6-digit HUID number from April 1," Kothari added.

Echoing Kothari's sentiments, Pethe added that those who have gold jewellery with a four-digit HUID or even without any HUID have no problem at all and can keep it with them without any worry.

Yogesh Singhal of the Bullion and Jewellers Association feels that jewellers are ready to implement this move but added that it would be better if the government could give some relaxation in certain cases.
