The Indian stock markets ended negatively on Thursday. While the S&P BSE Sensex ended at 59,126.36, down 0.5 per cent or almost 287 points the broader market Nifty50 ended at also down by 93 points or 0.5 per cent to end at 17,618.15.

Today marks the end of the September series where Nifty Bank gained after an underperformance of seven months.

In the 30 share BSE Sensex, only 8 stocks were trading in the green, minutes before the market closing time while the remaining 22 stocks were trading in the red. The top gainers were Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, NTPC, Hindustan Unilever and Titan. The top five losers on Thursday were Power Grid, Asian Paints, Axis Bank, Bajaj Auto and Kotak Mahindra Bank.   

Meanwhile, in the 50-share index Nifty50, 11 stocks advanced while 39 declined. The top five gainers on the day were Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Sun Pharmaceuticals, SBI Life and NTPC. Meanwhile, the top five losers around the closing time were Power Grid, Asian Paints, Eicher Motors, Axis Bank and Hero MotoCorp.

Out of the 15 Nifty sectoral indices, 10 were trading with declines while five advanced. Nifty Media, Nifty Metal and Nifty Bank were the biggest losers, while Nifty Realty, Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty PSU banks were the top gaining Nifty indices on Thursday.

Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare Index were also among gainers.

In the currency markets, the USDINR Futures were trading at 74.4550, up  or 0.02 per cent from the Wednesday closing price.
