The stock markets today ended on a weaker note. While the BSE Sensex ended at 52,323, going down by 0.34 per cent or over 178 points, the NSE Nifty 50 fell almost 0.5 per cent or 76 pints on the day of weekly expiry. This is a second straight fall for the stock markets. The domestic markets took cues from the US markets and settled lower today.

In the 30 share BSE Sensex, only 10 stocks were trading in the green at the end of Thursday’s trading session while the remaining 20 stocks were trading in the red. The top five gainers on Thursday at close were TCS, Asian Paints, Ultratech Cement Company, Infosys and Tech Mahindra while the top 5 losers were Indusind Bank, Dr Reddy’s Lab, NTPC, Maruti Suzuki and Axis Bank.

Meanwhile in the 50-share NSE Nifty 50, at the closing time 13 shares advanced while remaining 37 declined. Ultratech Cement Company, TCS, Infosys, Asian Paints and Tech Mahindra were the top 5 gainers. The top 5 losers in the day’s trade were Adani Ports, Indusind Bank, Hindalco Industries, Eicher Motors and NTPC.  

Major indices including Nifty Midcap 50, Nifty Next 50, Nifty Bank and Nifty Financial Services ended the day in the red.     

Nifty Indices     

  • Among the sectoral indices, Nifty Bank ended 1.14 per cent down at 34,605.40 
  • Nifty auto was down almost 1.4 per cent at 10,523.00.  
  • Nifty FMCG and Nifty IT ended in the green.    
  • Nifty PSU Bank ended at 2,422.25, down by over 1.4 per cent.    
  • Nifty Metal, Nifty Pharma and Nifty Media ended in the red on Wednesday. Nifty Metal was down 2.3 per cent while Nifty Media was down over 1 per cent. Nifty Pharma was down over 0.9 per cent     

Today, the USDINR futures were trading at 74.1800 on the BSE against the USD at 3:50 pm. They were trading down almost 1 per cent on the intraday basis.
