Stock Market Today: The 30-scrip benchmark Index Sensex on Wednesday opened weaker at 40,311.85 points, which was also the highest point. It touched a low of 40,153,99 points. Nifty on the other hand, at NSE opened at 11,911.50 points after closing at 11,9127.20 on Tuesday. The Nifty was trading at 11,887.90 points on Wednesday morning. As far as gainer are concerned, Sun Pharma was the top gainer, up 1.5 per cent on the index, followed by gains in M&M and Vedanta, up over 1 per cent each. While, HCL Tech and Titan were among top losers.

Meanwhile, the broader markets were, however, outperforming the frontline indices. The S&P BSE mid-cap index was up 0.08 per cent, while the S&P BSE small-cap index was up 0.27 per cent. On the other hand, Asian shares remained not so affected on Wednesday as investors still awaiting new developments on the trade war between the United States and China.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was unchanged. Australian shares were up 0.14 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei stock index rose 0.35 per cent. However, the trends on SGX Nifty is signalling towards a negative opening for the domestic markets.

Meanwhile, on Wall Street, Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.11 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 0.12 per cent, and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.02 per cent during the overnight trade on Tuesday.

Oil prices fell on Wednesday, pulled down by a larger-than-expected build-up in U.S. crude stocks, after gaining for three straight sessions on expectations of an easing of in U.S.-China trade tensions.

Brent crude futures were at $62.60 a barrel by 0330 GMT, down 36 cents, or 0.6%. Brent settled up 1.3% on Tuesday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 29 cents, or 0.5%, to $56.94 per barrel, having closed up 1.2% in the previous session.
