After a volatile Wednesday and negative closing, the stock markets ended positively on Thursday – the monthly expiry day. The BSE Sensex ended at 52,653.07, up by almost 209 points or 0.40 per cent while the broader market NSE Nifty 50 ended at 15,778.40, down by almost 68 points or 0.44 per cent.

In the 30 share BSE Sensex, 16 stocks were trading in the green at the end of Thursday’s trading session while the remaining 14 stocks were trading in the red at the closing time. The top 5 gainers on Wednesday at close were Tata Steel, Bajaj Finserv, SBI, HCL Technologies and Sun Pharma while the top 5 losers were Maruti Suzuki, Power Grid, Bajaj Auto, ITC and Dr Reddy’s Lab.

Meanwhile in the 50-share NSE Nifty 50, at the closing time 22 shares advanced, while the remaining 28 shares declined. Hindalco Industries, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finserv, SBI and JSW Steel were the top 5 gainers on Thursday. The top 5 losers in the day’s trade were Maruti Suzuki, Power Grid, Bajaj Auto, ITC and Coal India.    

Metal Stocks had a strong run with Hindalco Industries gaining up almost 10 per cent on the NSE Nifty 50, followed by Tata Steel which was up 7 per cent. State Bank of India shares (SBI Share price) also gained 4%.       

Major indices including Nifty Midcap 50, Nifty Bank and Nifty Financial Services ended in the green on Thursday. Nifty Next 50 ended in the red today.                

Nifty Sectoral Indices              

  1. Among the sectoral indices, Nifty Bank ended 0.46 per cent up at 34,691.50.    
  2. Nifty auto was down 0.44 per cent at 9,956.65.      
  3. Nifty Realty was also down by over 1.61 per cent and ended at 397.50.            
  4. Nifty PSU Bank ended at 2,449.30, down 3.25 per cent from the Wednesday closing.             
  5. Nifty FMCG and Nifty Pharma ended in the red on Thursday. Nifty IT, Nifty Media and Nifty Metal ended in the green.                

Today, the USDINR futures were trading at 74.4825 on the BSE against the USD at 3:55 pm moving with a negative bias and down by 0.18 per cent from the Wednesday closing price.
