As many as 80 per cent of the Nifty50 constituents gained in October 2022, a data release by domestic brokerage Motilal Oswal said. Among all, public sector company Coal India has turned out to be one of the biggest gainers in terms of year-to-date (YTD) and month-on-month (MoM).

Among Nifty constituents, 40 of them closed higher in October 22 and around 44 per cent of Nifty constituents outperformed the benchmark indices, Motilal Oswal said in its report.

It added nearly 65 per cent of Nifty constituents traded higher YTD, the brokerage said, listing Adani Enterprises, Coal India, M&M, ITC, and Eicher Motors as among the top gainers YTD.

Coal India, which is scheduled to release its July-September quarter earnings for the financial year 2022-23 (Q2FY23) next week, has gained around 68 per cent YTD and 16 per cent MoM.

While Axis Bank on strong Q2 has jumped most by 24 per cent MoM and Adani Ent gained the highest in YTD by 96 per cent, the report mentioned, quoting the highest gainers in YTD and MoM terms.

Heavyweights such as HCL Tech, L&T, Infosys, UPL, NTPC, SBI, HDFC, and Maruti were among the top gainers in October 2022, between 8-12 per cent, while Asian Paints, HUL, Tata Consumer, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, Divi’s Lab were among the top losers, down 7-3 per cent in the last month.

Sectorally, Banks, Technology supported the frontline indices most to end positively in the previous month, while Consumer and Media segments were among the weakest in October.

PSU Bank sector has outperformed the markets as well as the peer sectors by gaining most by 16 and 37 per cent – MoM and YTD, respectively.

The Nifty index in the previous month gained nearly 5 per cent and registered a growth of 4 per cent YTD, the brokerage mentioned in the report. While broader markets such as Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 gained in October, but mixed in YTD as the latter was down 14 per cent YTD.
