In a historic move, the BSE Sensex today hit 50,000 mark – an unprecedented feat. This is an all-time high and what is more, it has been achieved at a time when Covid-19 has affected all businesses and the wider Indian and global economies. But do you now the journey of Sensex? Varun Dubey said that the journey of Sensex to 50,000 mark has been very interesting. It took almost 14 years for the Sensex to reach 1000 points from 100. However, to reach the historic 50,000 mark from 40,000, it did not even take it 14 months!

Sensex went live as far back as 2nd January, 1986. Though trading used to happen even prior to this.

Sensex Journey

The base year was taken as 1978-79. The base was put at 100. 

Sensex reached 1000 mark on 25 July 1990. 

Sensex reached to 10,000 on 7th February 2006. 

It took another one year for Sensex to touch 20000. 

To reach another 10000, it took 10 years. 

Sensex reached 30,000 mark on 26 April 2017. 

The next 10,000 was achieved in next two years.

The index touched the 40,000 mark on 3 June 2019. 

It has not taken it 14 months to touch 50,000 mark.

On a lighter note, the Market Guru said that the Sensex could see a level of 100,000 in a matter of 4- 5 years if the Sensex continues in this fashion
