Dhanteras marks the beginning of the Diwali festive season. Also known as Dhanvantari Trayodashi, it falls on the 13th day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu calendar.  It is seen as an auspicious day to buy jewellery for prosperity and good fortune. Hence, we often see people rushing to buy jewellery on the day. But Dhanateras need not only be about gold and silver. Today, there are multiple options available when it comes to jewellery, from polki to pearls.  However, given that this is a long-term investment, one must exercise due caution when buying jewellery. “Jewellery, especially when falling on the higher end of the price spectrum, must be bought with its future value in consideration. We have to consider two aspects here, its valuation over time and its popularity. For instance, classic pieces like polki or judau sets never go out of fashion. These are also seen as heirloom pieces that are passed from one generation to the next. Dhanteras can be utilised as the occasion to start investing in these timeless pieces,” suggests Sumit Dassani on future value.

Dassani adds, “Although heirloom pieces are important, we must also make sure that they are trendy enough to be worn today. For instance, pearl jewellery is currently ruling the ramp. A good tip here would be to go for pieces that combine both a trendy design with timeless combinations, ensuring that one wears it often.”

“While people do usually conduct due diligence when buying gold, they often fail to carry out the same precautions when buying pearls, stone-set, or polki jewellery. This is a mistake as these precious add-ons also command a fair price. If buying polki or jadau sets, make sure that the jeweller provides certification or a buy-back option. In the case of gold, Hallmark certification must be ascertained. Certification is also important in terms of investment. It establishes the credibility of the jewellery and the jeweller,” Dassani further suggested.

“Budget is always an important aspect when buying jewellery. Other than the price of the piece, one must also keep in mind the making charge. This can depend on the type, design, and the mode of jewellery making. Dhanteras is an occasion to celebrate one’s good fortune, prevent bad omens, and bring luck and prosperity. With beautiful jewellery pieces in all kinds of combinations flooding the market, it’s a good time to look for something that fits individual tastes and budgets. This Dhanteras, let’s worship Lord Dhanvantari with a celebration of beautiful craftsmanship and creativity,” concludes Dassani.
