Nifty December futures closed at a premium of 13.45 points versus a premium of 4.50 points. The market added Rs 36005 cr in open interest, taking the total open interest in the F&O segment to Rs. 5,18,237 crore. The Nifty call option added 54.31 lakh shares in open interest and the put option added 56.47 lakh shares in open interest. SGX Nifty is trading at 13530 now, down nearly 40 points.

BATA INDIA (21%) EICHER MOT (14%), HEROMOTO CO (12%), POWER GRID (12%) ESCORTS (9%) and BHARAT FORG (6%) were the top gainers in terms of open interest. ICICI GI (-15), LIC HSG FIN (-12%), ONGC (-9%) and MUTHOOT FIN (-6%) and TORNT POWER (-5%) were the top losers in terms of open interest.

Overall futures & options volumes currently stand at 190.64 lakh contracts, with a turnover of Rs 1650912 cr. Volumes in the F&O segment were lower as compared to the previous trading session.

Market commentary:

The Nifty opened with a gain of 60 points on December 14, 2020, in line with strong cues from global markets. Thereafter, the Nifty went in negative zone due to profit booking at higher levels. Barring Nifty Auto and Reality indices, all other indices closed in the positive zone rising by 1-2%. In the afternoon, the Nifty managed to turn positive aided by buying at lower levels. Stocks like ONGC, LT, CIPLA, COALINDIA and IOC were top gainers that rose by 3-4%, while stocks like EICHERMOT, HEROMOTOCO, M&M, HDFCLIFE and TECHM were top losers that fell by 2-3%. The Nifty closed at around 13568 levels with a gain of 0.21%.

Daily view:

About 0.08 lakh shares were shed in open interest with an increase in prices this indicates that short covering was observed by market participants. On the options front, the volatility index increased by 3.25%.
