The BSE benchmark Sensex settled at 41,852.38 up around 0.6% from the Friday close while the broader Nifty also ended up at 12,329.50 points scaling over 71 points. Infosys, HDFC Bank, Powergrid, Kotak Bank stocks were the volume toppers on the BSE Sensex. Infosys was the top performer on the index with almost a 5% rise in the share price followed by Bharti Airtel, IndusInd Bank, Hindustan Unilever and Tata Steel.

Among the top five laggards were Yes Bank which was down by 5.6% followed by HDFC, Bajaj Auto, ICICI Bank, Nestle India and Axis Bank.

The majority of the Nifty sectoral indices were trading in the green with Nifty50 ending the day up 0.4%.

The BSE Utilities index was trading in the green in Monday's afternoon session with shares of PTC India, Jaiprakash Power Ventures, BF Utilities, Adani Transmissions, NLC India, Nava Bharat Ventures, Adani Power, GAIL (India) and Power Grid Corporation of India among the top gainers.

RTN Power, Reliance PowerNSE, Reliance Infrastructure, RTN Infra, Orient Green Power Company and GVK Power & Infrastructure were among the top losers in the index.

Earlier in the day, the Sensex opened 111 points higher at 41,788 and Nifty gained 40 points to 12,296. Market breadth was positive with 1,419 stocks rising against 740 falling on BSE. On Nifty, 34 stocks rose against 16 trading in the red.

However, Asian markets have shown mixed responses ahead of planned signing of the China-US trade pact later this week.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares did not move much outside of Japan, having hit the highest since the middle of 2018 last week.

On Monday, oil prices edged down riding on the ease in fears of conflict between the United States and Iran. Brent crude was down 13 cents, or 0.2%, at $64.85 per barrel.
