The move is aimed at upgrading the railway network to its high speed potential. To facilitate this change, track on golden Quadrilateral and Diagonals are being upgraded to cater to a speed of 130 km-160 KMPH.

However, It should not to be misconstrued that all non-AC coaches will be converted into AC coaches, the railways has clarified.

AC coaches are essentially a technical need for trains running at 130 to 160 KMPH . Wind and weather factors demand that only certain type of coaches can run at higher speeds.

Meanwhile, the railways has said that while the price of tickets of modified AC Coaches will remain very affordable, the comfort and conveniences will increase manifold and travel time will also reduce substantially.

“All non-AC coaches will be replaced. Very minuscule number are being planned for future trains, which would run on tracks having running speed of 130kms/ hour and above. Presently, only Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah sections are being geared up for that upgrade,” Indian Railways said in a statement.

In another major change in sitting capacity, a prototype of 83-berth AC coach is being designed. Presently, there are 72 berths/seats in a coach of a train.

According to the railway sources, a new design is being developed for these coaches at Rail Coach Factory and soon 83-seat AC coach will be rolled out.
