Indian Railways has approved 660 additional trains in June. These trains include 552 mail and express trains and 108 holiday special trains. During pre-Covid, an average of about 1768 Mail/Express trains were operating daily.  As on 01.06.2021, about 800 Mail/Express trains were in operation as per Indian Railways. "During the period 01.06.2021 to 18.06.2021, approval for operating 660 additional Mail/Express trains has been given to the Zonal Railway," said a statement from the Indian Railways.

The decision to increase operation of trains by the Indian Railways has been taken in the view of flattening of Corona Curve and to facilitate the traveling public, movement of migrant labour and to clear the waiting list in various origin destination clusters.   

As on 18.06.2021, about 983 Mail/Express trains are being operated daily, which is about 56% of the pre-Covid level. The number of trains is being enhanced gradually as per demand and commercial justification, said the Indian Railways.    

It may be noted that Zonal Railways are advised to restore trains in a graded manner keeping in view local conditions, tickets demand situation, and Covid cases in the region. 

Meanwhile, as per the Government of India data, as many as 60,753 fresh Covid 19 cases and 1,647 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. The health Ministry data also showed 97,743 people were discharged. Total deaths and discharges stood at 3,85,137 and 2,86,78,390 respectively, while 27,23,88,783 people were vaccinated.
