In a bid to ensure contactless ticket checking, the Indian Railways on Thursday said that it will generate QR code for the railway tickets. This new ticket booking facility, the Indian Railways said, will be made available in both online and offline modes. The QR code for railway tickets will ensure zero contact between the passengers and the railway employees while checking the tickets.

On how the QR code will be given to railway passengers, the Indian Railways officials said that passengers booking Indian Railways tickets (both online and offline) will be given QR code against the ticket via SMS. The passenger buying the ticket will have to keep that QR code safe in his or her mobile phone. The railway official will scan that QR code while checking the tickets. Even platform tickets can be bought via digital modes and 85 percent of the tickets are being booked through electronic platforms.

Explaining on how the whole digitization of the railway tickets will happen, the Indian Railways said that they have taken a host of measures to ensure complete digitization of its operations. The IRCTC railway ticket booking website is getting redesigned and the new revived IRCTC portal will be rolled out any time in August 2020. The Indian Railways claimed that passengers will have much better experience when the revived IRCTC portal will be rolled out.
