Indian Railways has issued new rules for passengers travelling in trains during night. The late-night rules are drafted keeping the convenience of passengers in mind. IRCTC On-board TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner), catering staff and other railway personnel have been asked to maintain the public etiquette in trains and guide people.

Passengers are prohibited from smoking, drinking alcohol or do any activity against public acceptance in train compartments. 

IRCTC rules: What are the new rules

  • No passenger in their seat, compartment or coach can talk on the mobile in loud voice
  • No passenger can listen to music at high decibels without earphones
  • No passengers will be allowed to keep the lights on after 10 PM except the night light

  • After 10 PM, TTE can’t come to check the ticket of the passenger
  • Except for the night light, all lights should be switched off
  • Passengers travelling in groups can’t interact after 10 PM
  • Lower-berth Passengers can’t say anything if a middle-berth co-passenger opens up their seat
  • Online food in train services cannot serve food after 10 PM. However, you can pre-order your meal or breakfast in the train even at night with e-catering services

IRCTC rules: Luggage rule

Passengers travelling in an AC coach can carry a maximum of 70 kg of luggage. In the sleeper class 40 kg and in the second class 35 kg luggage is free.  With extra luggage charges in the AC class, passengers will be allowed to carry 150 Kg, in a sleeper 80kg, and a second sitting 70 kg bag and baggage.
