The Union Cabinet has approved the Bengaluru suburban rail project worth to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore today. The decision was taken in a virtual conference chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The decision will help the Bengaluru suburban rail project to cater to the rising demand of daily commuters putting pressure on the local transport system.

The 148-km long Bengaluru suburban rail project was announced by the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the budget 2020-21. While making announcement of the Bengaluru suburban rail project, FM Sitharaman had said that the fare of the upcoming suburban transport system would be in sync with the metro rail fare.

In the budget 2020, Nirmala Sitharaman had also announced that center would provide 20 per cent equity in the Bengaluru suburban rail project and facilitate 60 per cent external financial assistance to the project.

The Bengaluru suburban rail project will comprise four corridors namely — KSR Bengaluru City-Devanahalli, Byappanahall-Chikkabanavara, Kengeri-Cantonment-Whitefield and Heelalige-Rajanukunte.

Bengaluru is one of the most congested cities in India and this suburban rail project will enable the local transport system to bring daily commuters from road transport to a mass transit system.

The Railway Board has already cleared the Bengaluru suburban rail project but the proposal was awaiting the nod from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.
