The Union Budget 2022-23 is expected to be presented by the Union Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, 2022. The budget session of Parliament will start from January 31 and will continue till April 8.

The government is likely to increase the expenditure on railways in the upcoming Budget. The budgeted amount may be increased by 15 per cent. Along with this, there is a strong possibility of 10 new trains being introduced.

The government is also planning to speed up rail connectivity in the metro cities. To do this, new trains with aluminium coaches maybe be introduced. The government may also offer the private sector to participate in making this possible.

Pandey added that the government would emphasise the goal of 100 per cent electrification of Indian Railways. There are also expectations of a National Rail Plan for India being introduced.

The plan will set the targets to be achieved by the year 2030, mainly using technological advancement. It will focus on achieving zero-carbon emissions in Indian Railways by 2030. To achieve this, a new train project, operated using Hydrogen or other Biofuel, might also be announced.

He also said that there are some dedicated freight corridors that are yet to be completed. These include East Coast Corridor connecting Kharagpur with Vijayawada, the East-West corridor between Bhusaval and Dankuni via Kharagpur and North-South corridor connecting Itarsi with Vijayawada.
