Bhopal gas tragedy activist awarded Padma Shri posthumously

Bhopal Gas tragedy activist Abdul Jabbar has been awarded Padma Shri award (posthumously). Jabbar, himself a victim of the gas tragedy, fought for the justice of 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. He organised several protests seeking compensation for the victims and their survivors. Jabbar passed away on November 14, 2019 in Bhopal. Speaking to ANI, his wife Shayara Bano said, “He took up the responsibility of Bhopal gas tragedy victims from the very day it took place.” Bhopal gas tragedy took place on the intervening night of December 02 and 03, 1984, after methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide company. The tragedy claimed lives of over 15000 individuals.
