Earlier, if individuals needed to make any changes in the registered details of the Aadhar card — for example, a change in the postal address or surname — they had to provide the required supporting documents as evidence. For example, if an individual needed to change the address, he or she was required to submit the electric bills issued in his/her name for that respective address, or a letter issued by the local municipal councilor or other relevant documents as evidence of his/her address change. As a result of this cumbersome process, several individuals struggled to arrange the required documentation as proof.

UIDAI has changed this rule and mandated that individuals will not be required to furnish such documents anymore. If the head of the family has submitted the requisite details and supporting documents for the same, then the other family members can opt for the changes using their head of the family's Aadhar.

The Aadhar card is the most crucial identification document for all Indian citizens. And over the years, UIDAI has issued several instructions for all cardholders to avoid any trouble in the future. It is advisable that people follow these instructions to avoid any inconvenience.

The Government of India has always pushed individuals to keep the details on their Aadhar card updated. Recently, the government has also mandated linking the Aadhar cards of individuals with their voter ID cards. The decision to link Aadhar to voter cards stirred a controversy, as many pointed out that it may lead to a data breach. However, the government stipulated that the Election Commission strictly follow the guidelines prescribed by UIDAI and not store Aadhaar numbers in its database.
