Aadhaar card holders can now change their name on their own using the Self-Service Update Portal.

Aadhaar is a verifiable 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to the Indian citizen for free of cost. There are several services that Aadhaar provides to its users online.

If you want to make minor changes to your name in Aadhaar through 'Self-Service Update Portal' then you must know about what changes are allowed. According to the information provided by UIDAI, following changes can be made:

1) Spelling correction in the name provided the pronunciation is phonetically same.

2) Sequence change.

3) Short form to full form.

4) Name change after marriage.

It can be noted that in order to avail this service, the Aadhaar card holder will have to use the registered mobile number as the OTP Aadhaar authentication will be sent on it. Also, Rs 50 will be charged against each update request through the online portal.

Apart from the change in name, through the self-service update portal, Aadhaar Card holders can update their date of birth, gender and address. For submitting the supporting documents, you will be required to upload original coloured scanned copies of POA document as per the valid document list.
