Diwali holds a great significance as it marks the victory of good over evil. It is on this day that Lord Ram came back to Ayodhya. With the expansion of Indian culture, Diwali has also reached different parts of the world and is celebrated with fervour and gaiety in as many as 25 countries. You will be surprised to know that the festival is also an official holiday in 10 countries, apart from India. Here's the list 10 nations where public holidays on Diwali is declared:-

1. Mauritius: Diwali is celebrated across Mauritius by the Hindu population over a period of five days.

2. Fiji: Hindus comprise nearly one-third of Fiji's population. The festival was originally celebrated by labourers who had migrated from India during British colonial regime. Fiji celebrates Diwali for more than a week.

3. Nepal: The Himalayan nation celebrates "Swanti" which is equivalent of Diwali. It is celebrated for five days, ending with "Bhai Tika", similar to Bhai Dooj of Indian tradition.

4. Indonesia: Hindus living in Indonesia celebrate a festival similar to Diwali as Galungan. This Balinese festival is also victory of dharma over adharma, and the celebration continues for 10 days.

5. Malaysia: The festival is celebrated primarily by Hindu Malaysians. Diwali is an official holiday, marking rituals similar to that of India – lighting diyas, dressing up, and Lakshmi puja.

6. Singapore: Primarily observed by Tamil Hindus, Diwali is a gazetted public holiday in this island nation.

7. Sri Lanka: Diwali celebration begins with an oil bath in the morning, wearing new clothes, and then visit Hindu temples for worship.

8. Myanmar: Like India, Myanmar also celebrates Diwali with diyas, delicious food, new clothes and traditional dance.

9. Republic of Trinidad & Tobago: The festival of light is celebrated in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and other Caribbean islands in a big way. On this occasion, people light diyas and enjoy delicious food after Lakshmi Pooja.

10. Suriname: More than 30% population in Suriname comprise Hindus, who are descendants of immigrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Sarnami Hindustani, which is actually a dialect similar to Awadhi and Bhojpuri, is one of the official languages here. Diwali is one of the most popular festivals.
