Semiconductor PLI Scheme: The government has started scrutinising applications it has received for the semiconductor Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme. The evaluation is to be done by December 2022 and the names will be announced after the evaluation process is completed. It is expected that the final names will be declared by next year. According to the report, the government will also open the window from time-to-time in order to facilitate companies to submit their applications in different categories. The process will continue till next year so that a complete ecosystem can be built from fabrication to semiconductor manufacturing. 

Pandey said, according to the information received by Zee Business, the government has so far received 5 proposals for semiconductor and fabrication. Its value is Rs 1.53 lakh crores. Along with this, the government is in talks with other companies also. Apart from that, foreign companies have also shown interest in the semiconductor PLI scheme.

One of the big updates is that defense companies have applied for manufacturing semiconductors, Pandey said. Along with this other companies which are in the PSU sector or are in any way associated with semiconductors or planning to invest in EVs are also applying for the same, according to the information received by Zee Business.

Simultaneously, BEML, BHEL, and the defense PSUs are looking forward to setting up separate plants for fabrication, compound, and semiconductors and have also submitted applications for the same, said Pandey. It is expected that the overall valuation process will be completed by December and from January onwards it will be seen which company has been selected.

One big update that was seen yesterday was that Foxconn's chairman visited India yesterday, said Pandey. Foxconn has also applied for setting up a semiconductor plant in India with Vedanta as JV, he added.

So overall, a big development in the semiconductor sector will be seen ahead, he concluded.
