UPSC result 2018: Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region Dr Jitendra Singh has felicitated the toppers of Civil Services Examination, 2017 at a function organised in New Delhi on Tuesday, describing them as “architects of the New India”. Dr Singh urged them to utilise the opportunities available during their long careers for building a ‘New India’, saying that out of the 20 top rankers, 14 have engineering background and 2 medical background. As many of them had early education from government schools in small towns, the minister said this indicated that educational opportunities to excel are not just limited to the metro cities.
 
In the function, organised by the department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr Jitendra Singh said it has been a learning experience to interact with the young achievers during the felicitation, which is being organised by the government for the last four years.
 
He said the government has during the last few years initiated the practice of posting IAS officers early in their careers as Assistant Secretaries to be mentored for a period of 3 months in different Ministries/ Departments of Government of India. The move has introduced the young officers to various aspects of the functioning of the Central government, he said. 
 
The toppers were also addressed by Secretary, DoPT, C Chandramouli, who expressed confidence that the young officers would find innovative solutions to these challenges. Senior officers of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions and parents & guardians of the young achievers were also present on the occasion.
 
It may be noted that Union Public Service Commission Civil last week announced the final result of Civil Services Exam 2017. Anu Kumari secured the second rank, followed by Sachin Gupta. Anu Kumari is the topper among the female candidates, securing an overall 2nd rank. She graduated with BSc (Hons) in Physics from Delhi University and also completed MBA (Finance & Marketing) from IMT, Nagpur. Hyderabad's Durishetty Anudeep is the topper in this year's exams.
 
The top 25 candidates consists of 17 men and 8 women. The top 25 candidates come from Engineering, Sciences, Anthropology, Management, Law, Mathematics, Medical and Commerce background graduating from top educational Institutions of the country. Optional subjects of these top 25 candidates ranged from Anthropology, Commerce & Accountancy, Economics, Geography, Law, Maths, Physics, Political Science & International Relations, Sociology, and Malayalam Literature.

A total of 9,57,590 candidates had applied for the examination, of which 4,56,625 appeared. As many as 13,366 managed to qualify for Mains exam held in Oct-Nov, 2017. Of these, 2568 candidates could qualify for Personality Test held in Feb-April, 2018, and in the final result 990 were recommended for the appointment to various categories of the services.
