The UPSC civil services final examination 2018 results were declared today in the evening and Kanishak Kataria emerged as the topper in the elite list. Srushti Jayant Deshmukh is the topper among women candidates securing an overall fifth rank. A B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering) from IIT Bombay, Kanishak Kataria belongs to SC category and qualified the examination with mathematics as his optional subject.

So, who is Kanishak Kataria, the boy who aced the Union Public Service Commission civil services test? On his LinkedIn profile, Kanishak calls himself "an enthusiastic person looking for opportunities to solve challenging real life problems. I have an aptitude of working with numbers with particular interests in the fields of Machine learning and Data analysis. Apart from this I am an avid sports follower and like to travel around the world." According to his LinkedIn profile, Kataria is currently working as a data scientist in qplum based in Bengaluru.

Rajasthan is the state from which Kanishak Kataria hails from. In fact, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot took to Twitter to congratulate him. He tweeted, "Heartiest congratulations to Rajasthan's Kanishak Kataria who has topped the UPSC civil services examination."

Out of a total of 759 (577 men and 182 women), the UPSC has recommended these candidates for appointment to various services like IAS, IPS, IFS etc, according to the UPSC statement. 

The commission organised the civil services (preliminary) examination 2018, on June 3, 2018. A total of 10,65,552 candidates applied for this examination, out of which 4,93,972 candidates took the examination.

According to the UPSC, top 25 candidates comprise 15 men and 10 women, adding that the recommended candidates also include 36 persons with benchmark disability (11 orthopedically handicapped; 12 visually challenged, 11 hearing impaired and two multiple disability).

Notably, the number of vacancies reported by the government to be filled is as under: IAS-180 (including reserved category), IFS-30, IPS-150, Central Services Group 'A'-384, Group 'B' services-68.

Appointment to various services will be made according to the number of vacancies available with due consideration to the provisions contained in the rules for the examination, the UPSC added.
