"Weekend lockdown to be imposed in UP on Saturdays & Sundays. Lockdown will come into effect on Friday 8 pm & continue till Monday 7 am. Only essential services will be allowed. Night curfew will remain imposed in all districts: Awanish K Awasthi, Additional Chief Secy, Home Dept," reported news agency ANI.

The decision comes moments after the Supreme Court stayed the Allahabad High Court order for a lockdown in the five worst-hit cities in UP.

On Monday, the Allahabad High Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to close all establishments private or government-run in these cities. However, the court exempted those offering essential services and clarified that it is not imposing a lockdown in all of Uttar Pradesh.

In another development Jharkhand government announced lockdown from April 22-29 with few exemptions. "Essential services allowed, religious places to remain open but the gathering of devotees not allowed. Mining, agricultural & construction activities permitted," reported ANI.
