The Indian cricket team’s performance down under over the next four weeks can in many ways decide where the national side goes over the next few years. Amid the ongoing arguments around captaincy, the Virat Kohli-led team has lost the first two ODIs against Australia, without really putting up a fight. The hosts have managed to put mammoth totals of 375 and 389 in these games with the Indian captain found short of ideas, or at least the social media things so.

India have now lost 6 out of last 8 ODIs and two consecutive series under Kohli's captaincy, played in 2020. Consequently, fans have questioned the brand of cricket that India is following under the leadership of Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri.

After Sunday’s loss, the Twitterati were quick to point out that it’s about time that India makes a change in leadership and give charge to Rohit Sharma who has led the Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles in the last eight years. Kohli’s failure to win a single ICC trophy also puts question marks over his role.

“Problem with @imVkohli as a captain is that he selects individuals rather than team. It’s seen in Indian team and in #rcb team. Need to think beyond Kohli and Shastri. They’ve failed to deliver in 3 icc tournaments.#AUSvIND,” a Twitter user said.

“Kohli-Shastri have officially destroyed Indian cricket. If Kohli has any shame left he has to resign from captaincy right away which I doubt he has, such a shameless guy! How can Rohit not be the captain when he is 100 times better than clueless Kohli?!” another user tweeted.

“India are really behind in understanding the modern ODI approach.. power hitting all through, more players who can bat bowl and field well. We are outdated in our thought process,” one user said.

There will be a change in guard soon when Virat Kohli leaves to India after playing the first Test of the four match series next month. In his absence, Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane is likely to lead the side in the final three games.
