According to a Hindustan report, the railways has developed an app named SABAL. The app will connect all the departments involved in the maintenance, repair and replacement of the tracks. The app will enable faster approval for track-related works and the go-ahead can be given even using an SMS. Once the app services are implemented across the railways, it will eliminate the need for moving a file for the purpose of track related works. A maintenance block can also be granted using the app and the same will be conveyed to the departments like Signal and Telecom, Engineering, and Civil Departments through SMS.

At present, the maintenance block procedure is manual and takes time as divisions try to maintain the punctuality. The trains keep running on the creaking tracks and accidents happen. The app will not only help in faster approval for maintenance block but will also keep a record of the repair works. It will also analyse the performance of the machines being used in the repair work.

It's notable that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in its March 2018 report had reprimanded the railways terming its track maintenance procedure antiquated and impracticable. The CAG had also said that the railways did not give adequate maintenance block and if the block is guaranteed, the work is not done properly.
