The film had released to 2,140 screens on July 19 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. On day 1, The Lion King collection stood at Rs 11.06 crore and the film picked up really well on Sunday, minting a jaw-dropping Rs 24.54 crore.
The Lion King film's overall collection at the end of day 3 stood at Rs 54.75 crore. "#TheLionKing sets the BO on ... Proves all forecasts/predictions wrong, as biz crosses ₹ 50 cr in 3 days... All versions," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Monday afternoon.
The Lion King is the only movie other than the Avengers to earn over Rs 50 crore on the opening weekend. Earlier, #AvengersEndgame had set a new benchmark by collecting ₹ 50 cr+ every single day: [Fri] ₹ 53.60 cr, [Sat] ₹ 52.20 cr, [Sun] ₹ 52.85 cr. India biz. All versions," Adarsh said, in another tweet.
Directed by Jon Favreau, the man who recreated The Jungle Book for the studio, The Lion King brings back the adventures of Simba, the lion cub who is to succeed his father Mufasa as King of the Pride Lands. Favreau's film updates the classic tale with photo-realistic and computer-generated animation.
The star-studded voice cast of the original Hollywood version includes Donald Glover, Beyonce Knowles, Seth Rogen, Alfre Woodard, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Billy Eichner, John Kani and John Oliver. Actor James Earl Jones reprises his role of Mufasa from the original. The Hindi version has been lent voices by Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjya Mishra and Ashish Vidyarthi, among others.
