The exam is set to take place on February 5, 2022.

According to a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and Vikram Nath, delaying GATE barely 48 hours before the planned test would cause confusion and uncertainty, and it might harm the careers of students who had studied for it.

According to PTI, the bench said that the timing of the examination is a matter of academic policy and that the court cannot intervene in this issue.

It was observed that nine lakh students are scheduled to take the exam and that 20,000 students had joined an online petition asking for the exam to be postponed.

"The students have prepared for it and the court cannot play with the career of the students by postponing the examination", the bench observed.

On Wednesday, the top court had agreed to list the plea seeking postponement of GATE, as per PTI mentioned.

According to the petition for the postponement of the exam, nine lakh students are scheduled to take the test at 200 centers, and the authorities have yet to publish Covid-appropriate guidelines for administering the exam.

The GATE is an examination that tests the understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science for admission to master's programs and recruitment by some PSUs.
